Strategy for Success Includes WBE Certification for Southboro's City Wide Maintenance
December 14, 2011

When Karen Sommers started her janitorial and building maintenance business in 2008, she and her team put a carefully crafted growth strategy into place that would help make City Wide Maintenance successful despite the recession. The latest accomplishment in the plan is securing certification as a Woman Business Enterprise (WBE) through the Massachusetts’ State Office of Minority and Women Business Assistance (SOMWBA).
“The SOMWBA designation has only been in place for one week and we have already entered the final approval stage for janitorial services with one client and will be meeting to discuss expanding our services with another client right after the first of the year. In each case, our designation as a WBE opened the door for City Wide to prove that we were the best choice for the job,” Karen Sommers reported. “We are very pleased to be a recognized WBE and thank SOMWBA for their professionalism and commitment to the minority and women owned businesses they serve,” she continued.
Along with other strategic plans, the WBE designation will help City Wide meet its aggressive growth targets. Currently, City Wide Maintenance cleans and maintains over 40 facilities throughout Massachusetts representing over a half a million square feet and expects to double revenue in 2010.
While the state certification is a powerful tool, it doesn’t replace quality. “Really, we are in the customer service business. And, the key to our success is making a commitment to each client: we do what we say we are going to do, we do it well and we manage the maintenance process so that our clients don’t have to.” Sommers explained.
